Spanish Flag Vine. I started these seeds indoors this spring. Planted one in a pot and the rest in the ground along a trellis. They grew fast, but took awhile to bloom. They provided an amazing natural privacy screen. I’ll post more pictures shortly…

Super easy & super cheap. Annuals we’ve grown from seed are full size & fab.

The beautiful Hollyhock. I bought this seed packet in 2008 at Target as part of the Sean Conway Collection. I bought a bunch of seed packets that year and never planted any of them. Nice. I wondered if they would still germinate. I started them indoors this spring and everything came up! I planted 2-3 seed pots of about 5 different flower packets. As things start to flower I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the remaining seeds will hold up so that I can plant the rest next year.

The flower bed is really filling in…. now if I could only keep the Japanese Beetles from munching on the zinnia leaves. Actually, I should not complain, the beetle population is pretty minimal compared to previous years.

The flower bed is making progress.

It’s been 3 weeks since I planted this flower bed (pictured here). All seeds are up and growing. At this stage things always seem slow going, but tis the nature of direct planting seeds I guess. It’s not the instant gratification you get when buying plants from a nursery.

O.C.D. party of one. Today I planted a grouping of annuals in this flower bed. Used some garden stakes to create a grid so I would know where to put my seeds. Along the back are Zinnias, Cosmos & Love Lies Bleeding. The middle area has smaller Zinnia, Nasturtium & Candytuft. The front is Alyssum. I’m late getting my flower seeds in the ground. Once I got the vegetable beds going I’ve been a total slacker.

It’s rainy today here in Ohio, so I’m at my desk job enjoying the flower from a peony plant we found growing wild along the road.
